Quick update

October 10, 2005

Just a quick update with more to come when I remember to bring my camera to work.

A group of 9 went to JD land (Pascagula) and worked this past weekend.

we ended up directly across the street from the Central Church of Christ helping a older couple that were still sleeping in their house of 52 years. They had done nothing to it. (this is 6 weeks after the storm) In a day we ripped out all the walls (plaster and paneling – leaving the studs exposed) and all the wood flooring( strange construction of slab w/ tar on top and then wood floors.. acts just like a cest pool). Sunday we finished up sprayed it down with bleach and trimmed their trees, cleaned the yard and sprayed again. They will have to stray 3 more days and then request an inspection before sheetrocking and new floors and ceilings go back.

The church currently has purchase orders from 2 congregations to pay for 100 houses worth of materials…. that will be a drop in the bucket! They wish to do 1000 homes…such a mission field. So many houses just in this one city that have yet to be touched. The old couple was given $2000 by FEMA. When we started they were needing a new water heater, she said let me get the check book, and David Kilbern (from the church there)told her, “What do you need that for? The church is going to pay for all of this to fix your home, it won’t cost you anything.” She began to cry and just wept on his shoulder. As we walked back across the street he told me that in 52 years they had never set foot across that street. (neither the couple coming to the church or the church going to the couple) But that has all changed.

I think you were all “being church” and I know you were pleasing to God. So amazing how He can take this tragedy to open doors for people to find out about Him!

Wow…our church is doing a 40 days of community campaign, the next journey past the 40 days of purpose.

You and these men and the church are the exact example of putting the needs of others before you own.
Truly an amazing story of love!
