Why/What we Believe 6

March 7, 2006

In the parable of the talents and the very similar Parable of the Minas, Jesus tells about the Kingdom, His favorite subject.

So what does that have to do with what we believe?

Well apparently 1 talent = 60 minas and 1 mina = 100 dracma and 1 dracma = 1 day’s wages. Ok unless you are a math wiz that may just be useless facts, but if you put it in today’s money it comes out like this: if you take a 50k / year salary, a talent is about 1.2 Million dollars!

The Master didn’t leave something of little value – it was of great worth.

So the poor smuck who had only 1.2 Million, what did he do wrong?

Well this inbetween time that we are in is like while the Master is gone. Jesus seems to be saying that when he comes back, some will have done well. Some will not have done well. Because?

The obvious answers are that they buried “it”. or that they were lazy. But I think that the basic problem is that the guy doesn’t trust the master. It is more apparent in the Minas, but when he says those things about the master, are they true?

I grew thinking they must be true. The bible was foremost always literal and so God must be a hard master, he must reap where he hasn’t sown. But what if that is not at all true. What if this bozo thinks that God really has a bad heart. The problem then is that this guy doesn’t trust God.

He says, “God is not fair, you expect too much God, you take things that are not yours.”

And God says, “Well if that is what you think I am like then, that is how I will treat you”. Don’t like that answer. Go read the Parable of the Minas.

So in not trusting the master the action is to play it safe. AHHH, Playing It Safe. Sounds … safe, Right?

Turns out that it is one of the worst mistakes you could ever make. It is important to know the nature of God.

This weekend will be yet ANOTHER blog encounter. This one will have some similarities but many differences. Any guesses?

I like what Bell said in Velvet Elvis about the older brother. He had his inheritance all along, but he didn’t trust the father enough to believe it….

What we miss when we refuse to “live it on the edge”.

**as for your query, I am clueless yet curious….

    ***stinking word verification is back…..
