The Accension

October 21, 2006

The arch of Titus sits at the Roman Forum. It immortalizes the emperor Titus.

below is a photo of one of the panels in the inside of the arch.

This panel shows Titus ascending. Beginning with Julius Caesar all the Caesars claimed to have ascended into the heavens making the claim that they went to be with the gods. This idea of the gods being above us coming from the Greek gods.

When Luke tells us of Jesus ascending his original readers would have understood that he was making the claim that Jesus was God, not Caesar.

The Ascension of Jesus

6When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, are you going to free Israel now and restore our kingdom?”

7“The Father sets those dates,” he replied, “and they are not for you to know. 8But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9It was not long after he said this that he was taken up into the sky while they were watching, and he disappeared into a cloud. 10As they were straining their eyes to see him, two white-robed men suddenly stood there among them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here staring at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. And someday, just as you saw him go, he will return!”

I have actually looked at new Bible translations by first reading Acts 2:38. The most important verse in the book may be verse 11 of chapter one. We can miss the power and importance of the accession if we are not careful.

Someday… just as you saw him go, he will return!

I am reading Yancy’s The Jesus I never knew….your opening sounded like something he was saying…..So, I am comparing you to Yancy…

How great the promise that he will come again…How amazing that he will take us with him. Have you ever thought about that kind of Exodus?

Donna, that’s a great book. I read it when it came out. I used to be a huge Yancey fan, but haven’t read the last two, I have them, but haven’t touched them.

And yes, Jesus is the second Moses. An unlikely leader to lead his people to the promised land.

    David, sorry for the scare.

Hey man… you were lost, but now you’re found (by me!). I was a bit sluggish in finding you – just thinking it was something to do with my ol’ computer or dial up or something.

Just an observation… but I thought it was neat that the previous post was “What’s Up” and now this one discusses “Ascension.” Sounds like you’ve had your head in the clouds, boy! 🙂

You and Kim are constantly in my prayers, true friend!
