Johnny and June – Chapter 8

February 23, 2007

Ok, I know some of you have stopped reading these as you await your copy of SexGod.  But I am trying not to ruin it for you and also to finish this so that as you do read if you want to come back and read these you can.

This is the next to last post. I decided to break these last two chapters apart. The thing I would like to pull out of this chapter is a discussion of Echad.

Reading this part of the chapter was one of those moments when so many things beyond what was being written were connecting. I love those moments. Times when all those years of Bible studies that at times were dry and at times were rich fill our minds with much to draw on.

“When it is said that the man and woman will become “one flesh,” the word for one in Hebrew is the echad”. Echad is oneness in the sense that some whole is made up of several parts or members.

The word is significant because it occurs in one of the most well-known passages of Scripture in Jewish history. It’s a prayer from the book of Deuteronomy that begins, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”…

…The LORD is one.

The LORD is echad.

God is echad…

Rob is making a point that marriage is not about marriage, its about a picture of God. I’m thinking about how we have this understanding of God as trinity. He is one but several parts. Marriage and Sex are a picture of this truth. God is and always has been in relationship. This is huge.

The chapter has a great discussion of being naked. Not neeked mind you. But having nothing hidden.

Next, “Whoopee Forever”…I can’t wait.

Oh we are still reading….at least I am. So I was looking for the reference to Johnny and June…did I miss it. That was one powerful love story, not necessarily a God-centered one….but you know what I mean.

The chapter starts out with Johnny and June and ends with a couple that have one of those relationships. Rob says it is the kind that affects everyone around them. I let you read what he says about why it is so important.
